September--
Morganton Festival-- (September 9th & 10th) don't forget to stop by Table Rock's booth and visit with us. We have iced tea from McDonald's, Pepsi products, and pizza available for purchase.
Spelling Bee-- The spelling bee will be held within the first two weeks of school. Start studying those words now. Here is a resource to assist you with grade level word list spellingbee.com
DAR Essay- rough draft due September 28th. This year's topic "Celebrating 100 Years of National Parks."
Guidelines: 600-1000 words, typed, 12pt. non-script font. All essay's must have a title page listing the following: title of essay (see topic), student's full name and address, student's phone number with area code, name of school and grade level, name of sponsoring chapter of the DAR, and the number of words.
Speech Contest-- During the month of September students need to select a speech and begin working toward reciting the speech. Classroom speech's will be delivered on or about October 8th & 9th
September Studies include: thesis statements, narrative essay, writing book reviews, and reading. Lots of READING!
Research Topics (2016/2017 school year)-- 1st semester-Career of Interest & 2nd semester-Colleges
Revolutionary War Weekend- Saturday, October 1st from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM
on the grounds of the Old Burke County Courthouse. There will be craftspersons demonstrating colonial-era skills (blacksmithing, flintknapping, rifle making, leather work, scrimshaw, weaving, quilting, and more), musicians, OVTA re-enactors in period dress who will provide storytelling and who will fire their rifles, makers of period dress explaining late 1700's clothing, demonstrations of colonial children's games, etc. The Burke Arts Council will have an artist assisting children and adults in the making of a mosaic about the story that will become a permanent window cover on the outside of the Arts Council building. People in period of dress will introduce the charters of freedom, now on permanent display on the grounds, and talk about the fact that the Declaration of Independence was in place in 1780 although it was ignored by the British and will talk about the fact that the Constitution and Bill of Rights might never had existed had it not been for the patriot victory at Kings Mountain. There may or may not be members of the Guilford County Courthouse fife and drum corps.
On Sunday, October 2nd, from 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM, the Charles McDowell House at 119 St. Mary's Church Road will come alive with re-enactors telling the story, crafts persons, musicians, tours of the house, a play presented by WPCC students about Burke County women who were heroes of the Revolution, and more. Children will learn colonial games on the front lawn.

Global Read Aloud-- A letter is coming home that introduces the Global Read Aloud and our class's participation in this exciting event.
Woolly Worm Festival-- 38th annual Woolly Worm Festival, October 15th & 16th in Banner Elk NC.

Where: Historic Burke County Courthouse lawn
When: Friday & Saturday, October 21 & 22 7pm, 7:30pm, 8pm, 8:30pm
NOTE: In case of inclement weather, the Ghost Tours will be cancelled.
